Hibernian were founded in the Cowgate area of Edinburgh in 1875 to help members of the Irish immigrant community settle into life in Edinburgh. Throughout the years, Hibernian have grown in stature and are now a community-focused club which is proud of its heritage, represented in its current crest – a harp for Ireland, a castle for Edinburgh, a ship for Leith and a football for its sporting history.
Hibernian set the benchmark for British teams in the European Cup, being the first British side to play in European competition, reaching the semi-final stage, with the club going on to secure victories in Europe against the likes of Barcelona, Napoli and Porto. Notable players to have plied their trade in Leith include George Best, Joe Baker and legendary goalkeeper Jim Leighton.
In 2016 the club won the Scottish Cup again, ending their 114-year wait and adding to their historic haul of Scottish League Cup and top division titles, with 150,000 supporters lining the streets of Edinburgh to hail their success.
